The Balmer Series in Hydrogen

Atomic Physics

In this experiment you will determine the Rydberg constant for hydrogen. You will use a special spectrometer, and become intimately acquainted with the Balmer transition lines in both mercury and hydrogen.

Behold the Balmer lines apparatus. At the far left is a hyrdogen lamp placed at the input of the spectrometer. The diffracting mirror reflects this input light towards the telescope. You will rotate this telescope and record the positions of several Balmer transition lines.
